瑞士心理学教授西奥多‧弗卢努瓦(Théodore Flournoy, 1854—1920)是西方最早研究前世回忆的科学家之一。弗卢努瓦是第六届国际心理学大会主席、日内瓦大学实验心理学系主任。他曾对一个名叫海伦‧史密斯(Hélène Smith)的人的案例进行了深入研究。史密斯有固定工作,身体健康,精神状态良好,为人诚实。她能够与灵魂交流,为人提供前世信息⁴⁵⁷。弗卢努瓦在1900年出版《从印度到火星》(From India to the Planet Mars),书中记录了他对史密斯的观察和分析。

史蒂文森出生于加拿大渥太华,父亲是律师。史蒂文森在1943年获得麦吉尔大学(McGill University)的医学博士学位,于1951年接受精神分析培训,1958年从华盛顿精神分析研究所(Washington Psychoanalytic Institute)毕业,后来成为弗吉尼亚大学医院(University of Virginia Hospita)的一名儿童精神病学家。⁴⁵⁹
1958年,美国心灵研究学会(American Society for Psychical Research, ASPR)为纪念美国心理学家兼哲学家威廉‧詹姆斯(William James, 1842—1910),举办了一项关于「超心灵现象以及其与人肉体死后精神存活问题之关联」的最佳论文竞赛。史蒂文森曾对44个报纸杂志刊登的拥有前世记忆的案例进行了综合医学分析,撰写的研究报告在竞赛中获奖⁴⁶¹。他在1960年正式发表了两篇相关的学术论文⁴⁶² ⁴⁶³。
在从印度和锡兰返回不久之后,史蒂文森接到了杜克大学超心理学实验室主任J.‧B.‧莱因(J. B. Rhine)转来的消息。莱因收到了一封来自阿拉斯加的有关过去生命记忆的案例的信,他将其转交给了史蒂文森。史蒂文森随后前往阿拉斯加,在那里的特林吉特部落(Tlingit tribes)中又找到了一些类似案例。

为了核实儿子所说的到底是童言戏语还是真实历史,布鲁斯经过一番仔细的调查研究,亲临各地采访曾在纳托马航母上服过役的一些老兵及当事人,发现儿子所说的一切属实。例如1945年,一个名叫詹姆斯‧休斯顿(James M. Huston Jr.)的美国飞行员在太平洋上执行任务时,不幸在硫磺岛坠机身亡。纳托马是当时美军在太平洋上的一艘航母的名字,而杰克‧拉尔森也确有其人。

澳大利亚悉尼大学心理学家罗斯‧孟席斯(Ross G. Menzies)和新南威尔士大学心理学家J.‧克里斯托弗‧克拉克 (J. Christopher Clarke)研究了50个澳大利亚儿童恐水症的案例。他们向孩子的家长询问了可能导致恐水症的相关经历。56%的案例家长表示孩子在第一次接触水时就表现出对水的恐惧⁵⁰²。
